The work
LSF builds open-source space hardware, ships it around the world, and runs on a mix of development contracts, EU-grants, sales, and donations. That mix only works if someone owns the operational backbone. This role is that person.
A typical week mixes:
- Odoo, every day. Posting supplier and customer invoices, reconciling bank movements, and — most importantly — splitting costs across the right projects and grants using analytical accounting. The reports we file depend on this being right.
- Payments and cash flow. Preparing supplier payment runs, managing petty cash and corporate cards, and giving the team a clear picture of what’s coming in and going out.
- External accountant handoff. Closing each month with a clean folder for the external accountant who signs off on tax filings, so compliance is never a fire drill.
- Procurement and logistics. Ordering electronic components and lab supplies, handling customs for inbound and outbound hardware (TARIC, EORI, VAT exemptions where they apply), and coordinating couriers for shipments across the EU and beyond.
- Office. Keeping the Athens office and lab space running — consumables, building issues, basic health and safety records.
What we’re looking for
You don’t need to be a licensed accountant. You do need to speak the language well enough to work with one, and to keep Odoo honest.
Useful experience:
- Hands-on time in an ERP. Odoo is ideal; SAP, SoftOne, Entersoft, or similar with willingness to ramp up on Odoo also works.
- Solid grasp of accounting fundamentals — debits and credits, VAT, withholding tax — and comfort with analytical / cost-center accounting in particular.
- Greek (native or fluent) for accountant, supplier, and customs communication, plus strong English for EU programmes and international suppliers.
- Comfortable with the tools we live in: Matrix/Element for chat, GitLab for tickets, a Linux-friendly workflow.
- Calm under the small chaos of customs clearance — happy to pick up the phone to a courier or a customs office and unstick a package.
How we work
LSF is a small, distributed, self-managing organization. We make decisions in the open, prefer durable docs over standing meetings, and treat operations as a first-class discipline rather than back-office overhead. This role is based in our Athens office because the work — lab inventory, customs, accountant coordination — is local by nature.
We weigh fit with the foundation and its mission at least as heavily as fit with the position. Read more in our hiring documentation.
